The Concern
Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about mature-tree loss, wooded land, habitat, wetlands, drainage effects, heat, and the visual character of Deltona.
What Deltona Can Actually Control
The City can regulate many aspects of clearing, buffers, landscaping, tree replacement, land use, and development design subject to state/federal law and property rights.
My Current Commitment
I will work for clear, enforceable environmental standards that protect meaningful natural resources while recognizing lawful property rights and the limits of municipal authority.
Proposed Actions
- Compare Deltona tree-preservation and replacement standards with peer Florida cities.
- Review wetland/buffer and clearing rules for measurable protection.
- Consider heat/shade and canopy value in streetscape and park decisions.
- Require transparent explanations when major development removes substantial natural areas.
Research Still Needed
Tree code, clearing permits, wetland rules, replacement ratios, peer-city ordinances, canopy data, and state preemptions.
